Labia minora hypertrophy is defined as an excessive size of the labia minora in relation to the labia majora. The labia minora, covered by the labia majora, may then protrude from the vulval slit. This can cause discomfort when exerting oneself, when wearing clothing or when looking good in underwear or a swimming costume, as well as discomfort during intimate intercourse.

Sometimes, labia majora that are too small are (also) responsible for this anatomical configuration. Lipofilling of the labia majora combined with resection of the excess labia minora is considered.

What does labiaplasty involve?

This procedure is performed under general anaesthetic during outpatient hospitalisation (discharge on the same day as the operation). Excess labia minora +/- lipofilling of the labia majora is performed.

Before the operation, two or three consultations will be necessary to define a surgical plan: resection of the excess labia minora and/or augmentation of the labia majora by lipofilling. This is a privileged opportunity to discuss the problems encountered by the patient and to understand his or her expectations in terms of results.

The consultation also provides an opportunity to analyze the patient’s body to ensure that nymphoplasty is indicated for his/her specific case. It will also be determined whether or not this procedure should be accompanied by a dermatological treatment or complementary intervention, or whether the patient has no contraindications to this procedure.
Finally, the consultation provides an opportunity to explain to the patient the precise course of the procedure, to take photographs that will enable simulations of the results of the procedure to be carried out so as to be as close as possible to the patient’s expectations, and also to provide recommendations to be applied before and/or after the procedure, including stopping smoking one month before and after the procedure (and other drug treatments such as anticoagulants and aspirin), or temporarily suspending certain sporting activities.

What happens after a labiaplasty?

The result is visible once the oedema has subsided and healing has taken place (two to three weeks). Local care is provided on a daily basis. As with any operation, there is a small risk of complications (detailed in the French Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery information sheet).

How is labiaplasty treated?

This is a strictly cosmetic operation, in other words it is not covered by the health insurance scheme, except in cases of vulvar reconstruction. During the consultation, Dr Azuelos will examine whether or not the need for this operation is linked to a pathology that could, following a request for prior agreement, potentially entitle the patient to reimbursement by the health insurance scheme.
