Hyaluronic acid is a natural, biocompatible and resorbable product that is widely used for surface and volume corrections, particularly on the face, hands, buttocks and genital area. It can be used to fill in areas where there is a loss or lack of volume.

Where should hyaluronic acid be injected?

On the face, dark circles, cheekbones, nasolabial folds, bitterness folds, lips, jawline and chin are all areas that can be treated with hyaluronic acid. A lack of volume, whether constitutional, linked to age or following weight loss, leads to a skeletonisation of the upper face; the temples are hollow, the eyes are hollow and dull, the cheekbones are flat or, on the contrary, lack relief; the jaw line is blurred and the chin is receding. Used in mesotherapy, hyaluronic acid treats wrinkles around the mouth (‘the bar code’) and neckline.

Hands are often a sign of skin ageing. Constantly exposed to the sun’s rays or winter’s aggressions, the skin on the hands becomes thinner, the volumes thinner, the hands become skeletonised, the veins and bones stand out.

Lipofilling or hyaluronic acid treatment restores volume and aesthetics to the hands.

Heels can also be injected to improve comfort when wearing high heels and prevent plantar pain.

The buttocks can also be treated with hyaluronic acid. A lack of curvature overall, on the top or on the sides is perfectly corrected by hyaluronic acid.

What does a hyaluronic acid injection involve?

Hyaluronic acid is injected directly, more or less superficially or deeply, depending on the area treated and the desired effect. Hyaluronic acid is injected directly into the thickness of the skin or into the subcutaneous space with the aim of filling in tissue: a wrinkle or creating volume (cheekbones, nose, etc.) to harmonise the body and figure. Hyaluronic acid is a product that can be absorbed within 8 to 12 months, so its effect diminishes over time, very gradually.

This means that patients who are reluctant to undergo surgery (either because of the general anaesthetic or because it is definitive) can completely correct or greatly reduce a defect without having to undergo surgery. It’s also an excellent way for a patient to simulate what surgery could achieve, before finally taking the plunge and obtaining a definitive result.

No preliminary tests are required before the injections.

A complete and global analysis of the face during the consultation allows us to choose the best treatment plan to correct the effects of time on each patient. This analysis must be carried out in motion and at rest. The approach of your hyaluronic acid surgeon in Paris is based on treatment of the area desired by the patient, but not only, because the face must be harmonious and very often treatment ‘in small touches’ in different areas of the face can give a healthy glow without it being perceptible that one area more than another has been particularly treated, and absolutely does not lead to a result of an overall swollen face. Dr Azuelos’ primary objective is to achieve a healthy glow and a natural, harmonious result.

The different hyaluronic acids

There are several types of hyaluronic acid, depending on the area and the desired result. The types of hyaluronic acid differ in concentration, composition and texture. The choice of type of hyaluronic acid depends on the area to be treated and the recommended treatment, depending on the desired effect (plumping hydration, filling in wrinkles or dark circles, reshaping facial volumes and contours, etc.).

Dr Azuelos favours the best products on the market, approved by the FDA (American health authority) and by the French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM).

Two types of acid can be used on the same area to create volume and then erase fine lines that have formed on the surface of the skin. The injection is made using a cannula or a fine needle. Depending on the desired result, the type of product used and the patient’s skin, one technique is preferred to the other.

How do I prepare for a session of hyaluronic acid injections?

Hyaluronic acid injections can be carried out as early as the first consultation. In this case, Dr Azuelos takes the time during the consultation to understand the problems encountered by the patient and his or her expectations in terms of results. The consultation also provides an opportunity to analyse the patient’s face/body to ensure that hyaluronic acid injections are indeed indicated for their specific case, and to ask questions to ensure that they have no contraindications to hyaluronic acid injections.

Finally, the consultation also provides an opportunity to discuss the treatment plan with the patient, and to take photographs that will be used to simulate the results of the injections in order to be as close as possible to the patient’s expectations, as well as to provide recommendations to be applied before and/or after the injections.

Before the injection, the areas to be corrected are identified, the volume to be injected is defined, and the skin is cleansed. An overall analysis is essential to restore harmony between the different areas of the face.

What happens after a hyaluronic acid injection?

Results are immediate and last between 6 and 18 months, depending on the product, the patient, the area and the number of injections. You can resume your social and professional life immediately after an injection session. Redness or bruising may appear at the injection site, but this generally disappears after a week.

A check-up or touch-up between 10 and 15 days is possible.

What are the risks associated with hyaluronic acid injections?

As with any procedure, there is a small risk of complications.

Among the most common are

The appearance of swelling, skin redness or bruising, the extent and duration of which vary depending on the product and the patient, but which disappear rapidly.
More rarely, a certain sensitivity of the skin, itching, skin paleness, hyperpigmentation or occasional small bruises may be observed at the injection sites during the first few days.

Frequently asked questions

The price of hyaluronic acid injections depends on several factors:

  • The type and quality of the product injected. Depending on the area to be treated, the hyaluronic acid used will vary depending on whether it is used to fill out the skin, create volume or simply to hydrate and plump.
  • The quantity injected: the price varies according to the number of syringes injected.
  • The technical complexity of the area treated.
  • The price usually also depends on the quality of the hyaluronic acid used, as some surgeons or aesthetic doctors authorised to inject offer several ranges of products of different quality, but this is not my case, as I prefer to work only with the highest quality products on the market.

It all depends on the defect mentioned during the consultation. Depending on whether it’s a question of filling out or creating volume linked or not to ageing of the skin, the answer will be different.

In the case of correction of a defect unrelated to the natural ageing of the skin and tissues (e.g. lip injections, medical rhinoplasty or dark circles), there is no minimum age and patients generally present between 20 and 30 years of age.

When it comes to treatments related to the ageing of the skin and tissues, it’s difficult to advise an age at which to consult, as everything depends on the patient, their skin quality, exposure to the sun, smoking habits, etc., as all these factors contribute to accelerating the premature ageing of the skin.

I therefore recommend consulting a dermatologist for advice whenever the patient feels the need.

It is perfectly possible to combine plastic surgery and aesthetic medicine, because sometimes the combination of the 2 can achieve the desired result.

For example, when a patient’s eyes droop, it may be useful to treat the excess skin on the eyelids, which closes the eyes with a blepharoplasty, and to reduce crow’s feet to open up the eyes.

Hyaluronic acid is a filling product used to fill or create volume. It is injected into the superficial layers of the skin, whereas botox (or botulinum toxin) is a product that prevents muscle contraction, and is therefore injected into the muscle in question. Botox can reduce wrinkles but will not be as effective as hyaluronic acid in this respect. On the other hand, botox will significantly slow the development and deepening of the wrinkle by preventing the muscle responsible for its formation from contracting.

Both products are absorbable.
