The face is the first part of the body that we reveal to others, but it is also the part that most distinguishes us from them. Indeed, our facial features make us unique, reflecting our ancestors and, by extension, our origins.
However, these features are subject to the effects of time, and sometimes their evolution is premature or does not correspond to our expectations.
Lifting’ is an English word meaning “to lift up”, and refers to the purpose of this procedure, which consists of lifting up certain parts of the face that have sagged.
The cervico-facial lift helps to erase the effects of ageing while preserving the features that characterise it, in order to obtain a harmonious face. The ‘deep plane’ cervico-facial lift is the ultimate cervico-facial rejuvenation procedure for correcting the effects of time, rapid weight loss, sun exposure or smoking, and restoring radiance to the face and neck.
The cervico-facial lift is not aimed at a single age group, as its indication depends on your sagging skin and how you feel about it.
Cervico-facial lifting
What does a cervico-facial lift involve?
The cervico-facial lift is performed through small incisions that are hidden in the folds of the ear in front of and behind the ear. The skin is re-draped, the deep structures (SMAS or superficial musculoaponeurotic system) repositioned, the oval of the face redefined and the folds of the face reduced.
The cheekbones are reshaped and furrows that are too deep are corrected by fat transfer/lipofilling. An additional incision under the chin is used to correct cervical bands and lipoaspirate excess fat from the lower face and neck, redefining the oval of the face.
Depending on age and the extent of skin laxity, the cervical-facial lift may only involve the superficial part of the face, i.e. the skin (this is called a mini-facelift) or, if it is more extensive, the skin and superficial musculoaponeurotic system (this is called a facelift).
The operation is performed under general anaesthetic during a short hospital stay (1 night). The resulting scars are very discreet.
How do you prepare for a cervico-facial lift?
Two to three consultations are necessary to define a surgical plan in association with the patient. These consultations provide an opportunity to discuss the patient’s case and to ensure that the facelift/mini-facelift is the right response to the problems he/she is experiencing, that the timing is right for this procedure and that the patient has no contraindications to the operation. In general, patients consult us when they notice the appearance of jowls, an overall sagging of the face (loss of the oval of the face) or a slackening of the neck.
If the patient is considered to be a good candidate for this operation, a surgical plan is drawn up in collaboration with him or her, to ensure that the result is perfectly in line with the patient’s and the surgeon’s expectations. These consultations also allow photographs to be taken so that simulations can be made of the result, based on the initial state of the patient’s face and neck, and to provide the patient with as much information as possible on the best way to prepare for the operation. This includes, in particular, stopping smoking one month before and after the operation (to optimise healing for the patient but also to limit the risk of complications), certain treatments (aspirin, anticoagulants, etc.), and certain physical activities (swimming, for example).
Preparing for the operation also provides an opportunity to discuss the possibility of combining the operation with other treatments, such as filling in furrows (if they are too deep) using lipofilling, neck liposuction, and upper and/or lower blepharoplasty.
Depending on the case, Dr Azuelos recommends certain treatments (creams or dermatological treatments) to optimally prepare the patient’s skin for the operation.
What are the after-effects of a cervico-facial lift?
The result is visible after four to six weeks, once the oedema has subsided. Bruising may appear, requiring you to avoid social life for a week.
The patient and/or a qualified nurse will wash the scars gently every day.
A compression garment (press lift) may be applied for a few weeks.
Post-operative pain is very slight, and painkillers may be taken.

Frequently asked questions
What are the risks of a cervico-facial lift?
As with any surgical procedure, complications such as infection, anaesthesia or haematoma may occur. These are not specific to this operation in particular, but are common to any operation performed under general anaesthetic.
What is covered by social security for a cervico-facial lift or mini-facelift?
This is almost exclusively a cosmetic procedure. In exceptional cases, a unilateral facelift may be reimbursed by the Assurance Maladie if there is facial asymmetry.
At what age can a cervico-facial lift be performed?
There is no minimum or maximum age for a cervico-facial lift. You decide when to consult your surgeon, depending on how you feel. The consultation enables the surgeon to give you the best possible advice on the most appropriate time to have the operation. Skin ageing is multifactorial: genetics, smoking, sun exposure and age. All these parameters vary from one person to another, which is why skin ageing differs so much from one person to another, and therefore the age at which a person feels the need to consult for this reason.
Is it possible to combine several procedures with a cervico-facial lift?
Yes, this is entirely possible and in some cases preferable, as it allows us to treat ageing in a comprehensive way by combining the facelift with a blepharoplasty, lipofilling, lip lift, etc., which harmonises the face and gives an even more natural result than you might think.
Where are the scars?
The scars are located behind the ear and in front of the ear, with part of them hidden in the folds of the ear and the hair. They are very discreet.
Are there alternatives to a cervico-facial lift to restore the oval shape of the face?
There are alternative solutions for restoring the oval shape of the face, such as hyaluronic acid injections, lipofilling or tensor threads. However, all these treatments are only moderately effective and are unsuitable solutions for major sagging. Their effects over time are altered more rapidly.
The consultation will enable us to decide whether one or a combination of these solutions is the right answer for the patient.
How long does a cervico-facial lift last?
Cervical-facial lifting is usually considered to last 10 years. However, it should be noted that its evolution is multifactorial and depends in particular on the quality of the skin, and therefore the rate of ageing of each patient, as well as exposure to the sun and smoking.
