Ageing of the eyelids changes the look of the eyes; they become tired, sad and dull. Anatomically, with age, the upper eyelid slackens and loses its tone, excess skin forms and fatty bags appear. The lower eyelid relaxes, loses its tone and fatty bags bulge out.

Blepharoplasty is a common, low-risk procedure that reopens, brightens and rejuvenates the eyes. Dr Arié Azuelos, a specialist in eyelid surgery, will provide you with the best possible support for your project.

For younger-looking eyes

Blepharoplasty, or cosmetic eyelid surgery, is a procedure that brightens and rejuvenates the eyes.

It is a simple, quick and painless procedure.

Blepharoplasty removes excess skin from the upper eyelid. It also removes fatty bags.

For the lower eyelid, blepharoplasty fills dark circles, removes bags and tightens the skin.

What does blepharoplasty involve?

The operation is carried out on an outpatient basis (discharge the same evening) under local anaesthetic, with sedation or general anaesthetic, depending on the extent of the surgical project and, above all, on the patient’s wishes.

For upper blepharoplasty, excess skin and fat pockets are removed. The final scar fades rapidly and is almost imperceptible, hidden in the crease of the eyelid. It becomes almost invisible, particularly when the eye is open.

In the case of lower blepharoplasty, two routes are possible and are performed by Dr Arié Azuelos, a specialist in eyelid surgery.

The under-eyelid approach, which will be masked by the eyelashes, makes it possible to resect the fatty pockets while re-draping the distended skin and filling in the dark circles.
The conjunctival approach (through the inside of the eyelid) limits the resection to the bags, making the scar completely invisible.

Upper and lower blepharoplasty are often combined.

How do I prepare for blepharoplasty?

Two or three consultations are necessary with your eyelid surgery specialist; these will enable you to identify the problems associated with ageing of the eyelids and the defects to be corrected.

The project will define whether an upper blepharoplasty, a lower blepharoplasty or a blepharoplasty of all 4 eyelids is necessary. The position of the scars is also discussed. No further examination is required.

As with any operation, it is strongly recommended that you stop smoking at least one month before the operation.

What happens after blepharoplasty?

The result is visible after four to six weeks, once the oedema has subsided. Bruising may appear, requiring you to avoid social contact for a week. There is little or no pain.

The patient and/or a qualified nurse will wash the scars gently every day.

There is no change in vision. Artificial tears and ophthalmic ointment are prescribed for the first few days after the operation.

What are the risks of blepharoplasty?

As with any surgical procedure, infectious, anaesthetic and haematoma complications may occur.

What is the cost of blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is almost exclusively a cosmetic procedure.

In exceptional cases, the procedure may be reimbursed by the French Assurance Maladie, provided that your eyelid surgeon has confirmed an amputation of the visual field.
