The eyes are often described as the mirror of the soul. It expresses our emotions, our joys and our concerns. But over time, the eyelids can sag or show excess skin, giving the face a tired or aged appearance. Surgery offers an effective solution to this natural ageing phenomenon: blepharoplasty.
What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is an aesthetic surgical procedure designed to correct abnormalities of the upper and/or lower eyelids. It removes excess skin, bags under the eyes and fatty deposits that can make the face look tired or aged. The aim of blepharoplasty is to rejuvenate the eyes while preserving a natural expression. The procedure can be carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthetic, on an outpatient basis, and can last between one and two hours depending on the extent of the corrections required.
How does blepharoplasty work?
Blepharoplasty is generally performed in a clinic under local anaesthetic combined with sedation, or under general anaesthetic depending on the patient and the complexity of the procedure. The surgeon begins by marking the incision lines, following the natural folds of the eyelid so that the scars are as inconspicuous as possible. He then makes the incision and removes or repositions excess fat, skin and muscle as required. Sutures are then applied, and the sutures are removed after 7 days. The operation lasts between one and two hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure. Outpatient hospitalisation is sufficient.
What are the potential risks of blepharoplasty?
The specific risks of this operation include complications such as bleeding, infections and reactions to anaesthesia. It is important to discuss these risks in detail with your surgeon before deciding to undergo blepharoplasty.
Is the result of blepharoplasty permanent?
Blepharoplasty generally offers long-lasting results that can significantly change the appearance of your face, giving a more rested, rejuvenated and less severe appearance. However, it is important to note that this procedure does not stop the natural ageing process. Over time, the skin may continue to sag and the eyelids may droop, although this usually takes several years. It is also crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle to preserve the effects of the surgery for as long as possible. For some patients, a second operation may be considered a few years after the first, in order to maintain the result. Discuss your expectations with your surgeon to fully understand what you can expect in the long term.
When can I see the final result of blepharoplasty?
The result of a blepharoplasty is usually visible a few weeks after the operation, once the initial swelling and bruising have begun to fade. It takes around 3 to 6 months to appreciate the final result. This period is necessary for the skin and tissues to heal completely and adapt to their new shape. It is essential to be patient during this recovery period and to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions to obtain the best possible result.
