Some men develop large mammary glands, creating a feminising pectoral volume that can be a source of complexes. In most cases, gynaecomastia surgery can correct this volume.

What is gynaecomastia?

Gynecomastia’ is the name given to a single or bilateral hyperplasia of the male mammary gland. Gynecomastia should be distinguished from adipomastia, which is an excess of fat in the pectoral area. Gynecomastia and adipomastia can coexist. This disabling hypertrophy causes physical and social embarrassment insofar as it feminises the male body.

Gynecomastia may be secondary to a hormonal disturbance, the correction of which will allow the gynecomastia to be reduced, which is why a complete check-up is systematically prescribed in order to be certain that a treatment cannot correct it. However, in most cases, no cause is found.

When gynaecomastia appears in adolescence, it often regresses naturally and spontaneously, so it is preferable to wait until adulthood to consult a doctor again if it persists. Gynecomastia can also appear following significant weight loss, often with associated excess skin.

How do I prepare for a gynaecomastia treatment?

Before the operation, two or three consultations are necessary to define the surgical plan.

During these consultations, Dr Azuelos analyses and advises the patient. He will also take photographs of the patient.

A hormone assessment by an endocrinologist is essential before any consultation with Dr Azuelos.

Smoking must be stopped one month before and after the operation to reduce the risk of complications and to optimise healing.

How is a gynaecomastia treatment carried out in Paris?

The aim of the operation is to reduce glandular volume in order to restore a masculine pectoral anatomy. The glandular tissue is removed through an incision around the areola.

In the case of associated adipomastia (fatty deposits), additional liposuction is necessary. Finally, when there is associated excess skin, a skin resection is performed.

In the case of glandular gynaecomastia (or true gynaecomastia), it may be accompanied by pain and milky secretions. In this case, liposuction is not sufficient and it is necessary to combine it with a partial or total removal of the gland. This procedure is carried out by Dr Azuelos under general anaesthetic during outpatient hospitalisation (discharge on the same day as the operation).

What happens after a gynaecomastia operation in Paris 7?

After the operation, oedema and bruising give way to a flattened pectoral area in 3 to 4 weeks. The result of male breast reduction surgery is definitive and generally stable over time in the case of both liposuction and surgical removal of the mammary gland and skin tissue.

Dressings are simple; scars are washed daily by the patient or by a qualified nurse. A support waistcoat will be worn 4 to 6 weeks after the operation. Post-operative pain is moderate and mainly localised to the areas removed.

Post-operative rest for a few days is recommended. Sport is not recommended for 1 to 2 months after the operation.

What are the risks of gynaecomastia?

As with any surgical operation, there is a small risk of complications (bleeding, infection, scarring problems).

How is gynaecomastia treated in Paris?

Gynecomastia is covered by the Assurance Maladie, which is not the case for adipomastia.

Thus, when gynaecomastia is proven (glandular), the operation to remove it is covered by social security, but when it is of adipose origin (adipomastia), its removal is not covered by social security.
